Originally built as a stacked-plan duplex, this cramped concrete structure served two 800sf homes consisting of impossibly small rooms starved for light and air. Through surgical demolition and the addition of an airy double-height living space, the renovation transforms the house into a light-filled, free flowing single-family home. By strategically shifting the front entrance to the side of the building and relocating the stair, the user’s experience of the building is radically altered. The efficiencies of the new plan allow for a new enlarged kitchen, master bedroom, study and family room, while primary living spaces shift focus from the noisy street to the back yard where a new swimming pool and pavilion activate the property. A series of wood decks and concrete patios weave a path through the previously unutilized garden.
